Total: 50 possible points
My essay rubric Custom rubric drafted by the user. Not an official assessment rubric. Claim and focus (20 points) The central claim answers the assignment and stays consistent throughout the draft. Evidence and reasoning (20 points) Relevant evidence supports each reason, and the explanation connects that evidence to the claim. Organization and clarity (10 points) Paragraphs have a clear purpose, and the order helps a reader follow the reasoning. Total possible points: 50
Start with the task, then choose criteria
Read the assignment before choosing what to assess. An academic argument may need criteria for claims, evidence and reasoning. A personal narrative may need criteria for focus, specific detail and reflection. The starting scaffold is only a custom example and should be changed when the task differs.
Keep criteria distinct enough that a reader can understand what each measures. If organization and clarity overlap in your assignment, combine them or explain the difference. Avoid scoring the same weakness twice under different names.
Write observable descriptions
Describe work a reviewer could point to in the draft. For evidence, you might require a relevant example and an explanation of how it supports the claim. A descriptor such as excellent or compelling is difficult to use without explaining what those words mean.
Assign point maxima deliberately. A criterion worth 20 out of 50 total points represents 40 percent of this points-based rubric. The tool totals the maxima but does not decide the relative importance of writing qualities for you.
Review and download the scaffold
All criteria need a name, description and positive maximum before the rubric is complete. The preview updates as you edit. Download the plain-text version and add any performance levels, scoring guidance or assignment rules you need outside the tool.
The file is labeled as a custom user-drafted rubric. It is not an official AP, IB, admissions or institutional standard. Have the person responsible for assessment approve the rubric before using it to assign grades.
